Spacious skies.
Fruited plains.
Purple mountain majesties.
America is beautiful, and so is Augusta County, Virginia.
From the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in the west to Shenandoah National Park in the east and everything in between, Augusta flourishes as a microcosm of our great nation.
Full of history, surrounded by nature, and always industrious, Augusta County (including the independent cities of Staunton and Waynesboro inside Augusta) is a wonderful place to call home.
Let’s explore its many vistas together, including how an Atlantic Builders home can really make Augusta come alive!
Augusta History
Augusta County was officially formed in 1738, and named after the mother of King George III. An important agricultural site (especially once the railroad came through), Augusta has always found new uses for its fertile land. From livestock, to crops, to vineyards, the land itself continues to be an important part in Augusta’s prosperity.
It’s called Archeological site number AU-154, and it was discovered in the early 1970s in Shenandoah National Park. What was found was a collection of over 2,000 artifacts dating between 3,000–1,000 BC. Most of the artifacts showcased a wider range of activities than those found at other nearby locations, meaning this spot in Augusta might have been a more central location used by Native Americans. That “everything’s here” quality that Augusta continues to offer today, as residents enjoy dining, shopping, and entertainment options galore.
More recently, Augusta County has experienced a revitalization and explosion of growth. There is an abundance of eateries, coffee shops, boutiques, and breweries nearby, in addition to the more commercial shopping destinations anchored by large stores like Target, Walmart, and Lowes.
Augusta Nature
The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests stretch over 1.8 million acres of Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. This combination of many forests has, over the years, formed one of the largest areas of public land in the nation—and it’s right in your Augusta County backyard. Camping, boating, swimming, fishing, picnicking, and every other outdoor activity you can imagine is waiting for you in these national forests.
And on the opposite side of Augusta County, there’s Shenandoah National Park. Enjoy wildflowers and waterfalls, woodlands and wonderful views. Venture out on foot into the green wilds or drive through them on the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive. Marvel at the Natural Chimneys, reaching their fingers of limestone up to the sky as they preserve the pre-history of Augusta County when it was underwater so many millions of years ago. Or go underneath Augusta and explore the Grand Caverns, America’s oldest continually operating commercial cave! It’s been a testament to Augusta’s industriousness since 1806!
Augusta Industry
Some of the top employers in the area highlight the industrious nature of Augusta County. Public schools and higher education institutions combine to make education one of the biggest industries in the area. Good for employees and families all at once!
Also good for both are two other companies with manufacturing plants in Augusta. Everyone loves chocolate and snack cakes, so it’s pretty exciting that Hershey Chocolate and McKee Foods (makers of Little Debbie and Drake’s snack cakes) have plants in Stuarts Draft.
